Definition and meaning of Perl

Perl is a programming language and likewise an acronym for Practical Extraction and Report Language (Perl). It’s a general purpose programming language originally design for text manipulation. From the definition it really explain what Perl does. It is a practical way to extract text and report language using a computer information programming language. 

Perl broadly derived from a fully blown C programming language with features of shell programming. It takes list from LISP (which is second oldest high level programming. The only one older that is still being used today is FORTRAN). Associative arrays AWK (which is a general purpose computer language design for processing text based data) and regular expression from SED which is a stream Editor, a simple powerful computer programme which is use to apply specific textual transformation to a sequential streaming text data. Originally created for unix but now available in all operating system.

Common Perl Applications

•   Perl is used for CGI (Common gateway interface) in WWW. This technology allows the web browser to get data from programs executed on web servers. Also serves as the “Glue” language of www.

•  It’s the key part of LAMP (A free software platform that is used to develop dynamic website)

•   Perl is used in RAD (Rapid Application Development) module development and as database interface. Helps to merge different database platform.

•  Perl is a free software licensed under the Artistic License and GNU general public license.
